The Road, by Cormac Mcarthy tells the story a man and son traveling down a road of post-apocalyptic times. This journey that the two go on symbolizes the love that the father has for his son, and the love that the two share despite all that's going on around them. "Hi papa he said. I'm right here." The son knows that its literally him and his father against all odds. The two share a bond that grows them closer now. Eventually, the man starts to cough up blood and he realizes that he is dying.
"The good guys keep trying" The father is trying to hold on to every bit of strength he has for his son. He feels like its his duty from God to keep his loved one protected. "I think I want to say goodbye to him" The father, a courageous man, did all he can do for his son. Teaching him all that he knew he needed to be taught about life itself. The whole story the fathers cough symbolized his up coming death, and he knew that with everything he did it was top priority to teach his son to keep going.
